End of an Era: Beloved Splash Mountain Officially Closes to Make Way for a New Marvel Themed Flume
Welp, it’s official. As of January 23rd, the famous Disney attraction Splash Mountain has logged its last flume. After years of heated debate, Disney has officially closed down the controversial ride in order to both stay fresh, and usher in a more modern IP. Opening in 2024, the new version of the beloved flume will star Marvel’s Iron Man! While Disney hasn’t revealed everything yet, they’ve teased the plot surrounding Robert Downey Jr.’s beloved hero.
Riders will start their journey in Tony Stark’s penthouse apartment in Stark tower. He is wishing his wife Pepper Potts well as she leaves for the weekend on important Avengers-level business. She walks out, and the action begins. Stark tells riders that he now has 72 uninterrupted hours to cheat on Pepper, and needs our help. We are introduced to Beth, a 22 year old NICU nurse who’s still in training. Stark tells us that he saw her a few weeks ago while soaring around New York City. Riders learn that he “spotted that ass from 30,000 feet and couldn’t not talk to her.” The two hit it off, and exchanged numbers.
Now, a few weeks later, Tony finally has the chance to cheat on his beloved with this inappropriately young nurse. As we begin to fly around New York with Tony, the ride begins to pick up. Until now, it’s been smooth sailing, but now there are small dips and turns every few seconds. Before long, we arrive at an extremely small apartment on the Lower East Side, ready to help Tony have his way with Beth.
Throughout all of this, riders will hear a phone ring every so often. Pepper is calling and it’s up to participants to help Tony come up with excuses as to why he can’t talk right now. This is where guests can really get creative! One fun addition to the log flumes is a point counter. The better the excuse, the more points a rider will receive. It’s the little things like this that really exemplify the talent of Disney’s Imagineers.
The final stage of the ride is a real risk for Disney. Tony and Beth get intimate while riders continue through the water, and Tony’s climax coincides with the final drop into the bramble bushes. It’s important to note that Disney is keeping some elements from the original ride, such as the bramble bushes, as well as the soundtrack playing “Zip A Dee Doo Dah” throughout the duration of the ride.
After hearing this tease, it’s no wonder fans are already rushing online to plan their 2024 Disney vacations! It’s never fun to see a favorite childhood ride go, but it sounds like Disney is ushering in a new memorable experience for generations to come!
